Sky High

This movie deserves more credit. I watched this as the car DVD for years. Even without that bias, this movie is objectively actually really good. The way class and individuality (also literal puberty) is presented with high school superheroes—everyone’s fantasy—and how all the main character’s powers are eventually used to save the day even if it’s not a cool power on the surface. I think every character is written incredibly well and can stand and support themselves well—especially the freshmen. Lots of hints come full circle that we dismiss because we assume a movie for kids has dumbed down writing quality. There are solid laugh out loud moments for me because of the writing and how the actors executed it. The costumes are designed beautifully everyone having their own signature color reflect who they are, the music being covers of iconic 80s hits (some I think the Sky High covers are better than the originals) and the overall production design and camera work were made with so much love. I bet a lot of people collectively agree that the twist was predictable, but that never bothered me because I simply think it plays into the comic book style and storytelling. It feels dramatic and cheesy but just like a superhero comic we read as kids! 5 out of 5 stars and nostalgic for such a wide range of people for such a wide range of reasons!
