GoodFellas
“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.”
Goodfellas by Martin Scorsese is the gangster movie par excellence. The slice of criminal life into which the director catapults us, is without a doubt for me the most realistic I have ever seen in cinema. An immense Ray Liotta, flanked by two sacred monsters like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, shows us the dichotomies of life as a criminal, taking us into a perverse thought mechanics in which you can almost understand and share his ideas out of your head. The sentence that I think encapsulates the meaning of the movie is: “I’m an average nobody, I get to live the rest of my life like a schnook.” Henry Hill always dreamed of being a gangster, not being able to be one almost destroyed the very reason for living. You could say that following his sometimes creepy and sometimes incredibly fascinating mentality, he has ceased to exist along with his gangster life.
