Logan
Big very poorly put together tangent upcoming and spoilers for the X-Men saga and the entire movie 🤩
I cry almost every time I watch this movie. This movie is so beautiful. It looks like art and the story is enriched with emotion and allegory just like most of the X-Men films. This movie can be a little bit too violent for my taste at times I’ll admit, but oh my god this movie is a masterpiece nonetheless.
People who think the X-Men movies aren’t political are all brainwashed. This movie is about Logan reluctantly helping these children who are the last mutants on earth cross the border to Canada because America is no longer safe for mutants, and obviously this country doesn’t feel too safe nowadays.
Not to toot my own horn, but I’m a bit of an X-Men movie timeline savant, everyone says it’s fucked up or complicated but it’s honestly not, and the way I see it logistically this movie can only fit either right after X2, or even following X-Men Days of Future Past. I kind of like the idea of this being the replacement X-Men 3, this feels more like a “Last Stand” than X3 anyways. If you don’t want to watch a “messy” timeline where 5 movies are mid (X3, Origins, Wolverine, Apocalypse, Dark Phoenix) , just watch the first two and then finish it off with this one, it lowkey follows up X2 perfectly like it’s meant to be. In this film we see that the Alkali corporation after William Stryker’s death in X2 has rebranded into Alkali-Transigen, and since the early 2000’s they have been implementing chemicals into the food and water in America to prevent natural mutancy, in the film they claimed that it “went away like polio”, they compare being a mutant to a disease. There aren’t too many mutants around anymore because of that, and because of Charles accident he had at the X-Mansion when he developed Alzheimer’s.
The “West Chester Incident” is so sad. I could almost cry just thinking about it. To the audiences knowledge there are only three natural born mutants left in America that didn’t die in the X-Mansion when Charles had that Alzheimer’s seizure, Logan, Charles, and Caliban, this makes the movie all the more grim, especially considering that Charles (up until moments before his death) cannot remember what he accidentally did in West Chester.
The main villain who is hunting the Mexican mutant children’s name is Donald (yeah X-Men isn’t political my ass), he is pretty much the enforcer for Dr. Rice who is like the Emperor Palpatine to Donald’s Darth Vader in this movie if that makes any sense. Dr. Rice justifies this entire crusade against mutant kind he has been up to for thirty years because Logan, during either the events of X2 or X-Men Apocalypse (depending on which timeline you prefer) killed his father, who was a soldier for William Stryker (masked soldier kidnapping children, wonder what political party his dad was apart of) at Alkali-Lake.
His crusade culminates with experimentation on children, all of whom were born in the bellies of Mexican mothers who “disappeared”, thematically this is somewhat similar to what happened to Jason Stryker, William Stryker’s mutant son, but on a much much larger scale as the mutation experiments were on numerous children rather than one, and then ultimately with a clone of the man who killed his father, Logan.
The clone of Logan is the antithesis of everything Logan stands for, the clone is without a soul and it is not the clones fault, don’t hate the monster hate Frankenstein, and it works perfectly for the finale of the X-Men saga, especially with everything Logan represents. The clone of Logan kills Charles who is essentially Logan’s mentor and father figure, and then attempts to kidnap Laura, Logan’s newfound daughter. I think this deliberately makes Logan’s self loathing theme throughout the movie much more powerful, as the enemy is himself, but also not himself at all. I think Logan blames himself for Charles accident at West Chester in a way, and I think that it haunts him. He pretty much lost a family that day, and in a way a daughter figure (Rogue), which I think made him resentful of Laura at first.
Logan was originally helping Laura get to the border for money, but more and more throughout the movie we see Logan start to help because of his heart, we start to see him become the Wolverine again, the hero he once was before all his friends died. In the end, Wolverine cannot defeat the clone and succumbs to his injuries, and Laura must use the bullet Logan intended on using to commit suicide to kill the clone.
In his last moments he accepts Laura as his daughter, and he tells her “Don’t be what they made you”, don’t be the “weapon” they have turned mutants into, don’t be the “evil” they have been twisted into, because they are good, and they are amazing people, with beautiful gifts that can help people. During Logan’s burial Laura recites the quote from the western movie she saw with Logan and Charles earlier in the film called Shane. “A man has to be what he is, Joey. Can't break the mold. There's no living with a killing. There's no going back. Right or wrong, it's a brand. A brand sticks. Now you run on home to your mother, and tell her... everything's all right. There aren't any more guns in the valley” there are truly no more guns in the valley, Logan was the last one, and the valley was America, and Magneto was right.
And let Laura be the MCU Wolverine 🗣️🗣️🗣️ it’s her time to be in the spotlight
