Gone with the Wind
1️⃣8️⃣MOVIES FOR THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF MY LIFE
——————————————————
Part 1️⃣7️⃣ ~ “Gone With The Wind” 👒💨🔥🐴👗
Age: 16
1️⃣7️⃣ Although i can’t really answer the “what’s your fav movie” question, i always say it’s Gone With The Wind.
1️⃣7️⃣ Barbie is my soul movie, but i think GWTW is a better answer, cuz it shows my love for the film industry and the golden age of hollywood in general.
1️⃣7️⃣ Around my 16th birthday i started watching old movies, and now they’re my favs. All films. American, german, french etc. Silent, black and white, technicolor etc. I just love good films.
1️⃣7️⃣ But i actually haven’t seen GWTW till about half a year later. This and Casablanca where on the top of my watchlist at that time. Casablanca was easy to watch. GWTW not so much. Cuz i had to find a day when i can take 4 full hours off to watch it.
1️⃣7️⃣ And i planned like a self date to watch it. I picked a day when i would be home alone (i kicked them out of the house) and i watched it on the TV in my livingroom (cuz i own it on DVD). And it was the first DVD that i had to turn to the other side for the full film (i also have Titanic on DVD but that one has 2 actual cds). I made popcorn and had lots of snacks and takeaway food. And for the first long movie sitdown it didn’t dissapoint. It’s the first interlude film i’ve seen.
1️⃣7️⃣ I later did the same thing for Cleopatra and i DO want to take a day off for Lawrence of Arabia one day, but god knows when i’ll have the time. Big, long, immersive stories that take place over multiple years>>
1️⃣7️⃣ I actually don’t know exactly how this became my fav movie. After i watched it i really loved it, and sometime between that (april) and july (when i was asked for my fav movie and my answer was GWTW) it became my fav.
1️⃣7️⃣ Scarlett O’Hara is one of my fav fictional characters OAT. I love her sm, i see myself in her sm. The first time i watch the movie i found it difficult to part with her once it was over, after witnessing years of her life and growth for the past 4 hours. “I’ll think about it tomorrow” helped me so much and is tattoo material for me. She’s also the embodiment of Slytherin and you can’t convince me otherwise. Is she an evil person? Not really. But she would sure do whatever it takes to get what she wants. And she definitely has a lot of villain traits.
1️⃣7️⃣ But we see her evolving from teenagehood to womanhood. We see her get changed by war and poverty. And we can’t help ourselves but root for her to achieve whatever she wants to.
1️⃣7️⃣ I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Vivien. In case you’re wondering, I’m also manifesting my fame Vivien Leigh style. The way she signed stuff as Scarlett before even getting the role? Iconic. And don’t even get me started on her and Laurence. THE BEST CELEBRITY COUPLE!
1️⃣7️⃣ I actually didn’t know Vivien before watching this, i only knew Clark cuz i’ve seen him in It Happened One Night (i love that film). But now all four of them: Vivien, Clark, Leslie and Olivia are very dear to me.
1️⃣7️⃣ I think i actuallt har a crush on Ashley the first time i saw it cuz of Leslie Howard. Now i don’t anymore, cuz i also read the book and now these characters mean too much to me to “sexualize” any of them.
1️⃣7️⃣ That summer i also read the book. And I would recommend the book to any film fans any day. I do think you should watch the film first, but maybe i’m biased bc that’s how i did it. But the book is incredible too. It goes more in depth about the characters. We learn more about Scarlett’s crush on Ashley and why they aren’t made for each other. More about Scarlett’s character overall. About her first child (no, not Bonnie). About her love for Tara. And there are just so many good quotes in that book that i saved. One of my fav books for sure!
1️⃣7️⃣ I even wrote about this story for one of my english essays. Cuz we had to write about somethijg that changed our lives. And i didn’t wanna go into personal stuff, so i wrote about this film, this book and Scarlett’s character and her escaping mechanisms.
1️⃣7️⃣ And i actually love all the main 4 characters a lot. They’re all dear to me and in a way they all represent a part of me. As weird as it sounds, Ashley is also a lot like me. Especially if you read the book. Maybe i’m actually on a journey process, from Ashley to Scarlett. And Melly… :,) I LOVE HER SM.
1️⃣7️⃣ I think Melly and Scarlett’s relationship is one of the best fictional characters dynamics. I don’t want to get into spoilers, but the way Scarlett hated her almost till the end while Melly loved her and was always on her side… And yes, i cried at the end. And i cried at that scene in the book too.
1️⃣7️⃣ And Melly and Ashley are so cute together. They’re made for each other. Their reunion is so heartwarming.
1️⃣7️⃣ No cuz ‘39 was like THE year for the film industry (at least in the first half of the 20th century). And Victor Flaming had a blast that year. Gone With The Wind AND The Wizard Of Oz?? It’s so strange that GWTW was much more popular than Oz when they both came out, but now everybody knows The Wizard Of Oz and nobody really talks about GWTW anymore.
1️⃣7️⃣ Btw i always need to tell people this: GWTW* IS THE HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIE OF ALL TIME ADJUSTED TO INFLATION!!!!*
**
1️⃣7️⃣ The iconic poster for this film is so… iconic. I even have a small one in my room. However, i was like 2 months ago old when i found out that poster didn’t come out with the movie, but with a rerelease decades later… :D I feel so dumb. Still iconic! And so is the logo.
1️⃣7️⃣ I actually knew some stuff about this movie for years before actuallt watching it. I knew the title cuz it’s iconic. I knew the poster cuz it was displayed in studio 1 at Walt Disney Studios Park (no, i didn’t get to take a photo with it cuz i haven’t seen the movie yet when i went for the last time before they renovated the whole thing, i only took a photo with the Some Like It Hot poster :(( ). And i knew the iconic curtain dress cuz of IDV.
1️⃣7️⃣ THE ENDING IS PERFECT, WE DON’T NEED A SEQUEL!! I know there is an uncannon sequel, but i won’t watch it. Boring people will say the ending doesn’t give us a clear conclusion. And so what? It leaves Scarlett right where she belongs. It’s by no means a happy ending (spoiler warning). She learns her life goal was never real. She never really loved Ashley. And the one she actuallt lover all along isn’t hers anymore. She loses her only friend. Money can’t satisfy her anymore. She loses everything. BUT she realizes she will always have Tara. And it ends on a hopeful note. She’ll try to get Rhett again. She’ll try to get her life back together. Stop the unnecessary sequels PLEASEE.
1️⃣7️⃣ Now let’s adress it… i knew the racism claims. But i’ve actually seen so many people saying it’s actually not even that racist, it just pictures the way the world was back in the day, that it seems like this movie having “racist” written all over it is unnecessary, since once people actually see it (if they even care to see it), they don’t agree with those claims. And it also earned Hattie McDaniel the first Oscar for a person of color.
1️⃣7️⃣ This film looks and sounds amazing. The score gives me chills. The cinematographer and coloring are outstanding. The scene where they run away in the carriage through the burning town>> The iconic “i’ll never be hungry again” scene>>>
1️⃣7️⃣ Don’t even get me started on the costumes. I’m a slut for the second half of the 19th century (i think it all started with Phantom Manor) and their wardrobe. Every single one of Scarlett’s dresses EATS. And during the party and Twelve Oaks, i couldn’t choose which of Scarlett or Ashley’s outfits i wanted more. You know that scene in 27 Dresses where they make fun of the GWTW themed wedding? They’d hate me, cuz if i had a wedding i’d also want everyone to dress as good as people dress in this film.
1️⃣7️⃣ This is only the second time i watch this film. After the first time i told myself i won’t watch it again for a long long time, to keep that initial impression and fascination. But i had to rewatch it for this list. And i’m happy to say the rewatch (only a year and 4 months later) didn’t ruin the film for me. It was actually very fun to see it now, after reading the book, and see everything that they changed/kept out. But now i really won’t rewatch it in like a decade. I’d love to watch it with my future partner one day tho. To have a movie night date.
1️⃣7️⃣ I also almost cried during the opening credits, seeing all the characters’ names and remembering all of them (especially from the book cuz with movies i usually tend to forget character names).
1️⃣7️⃣ And this rewatch didn’t feel long at all. I was so captivated by this world and these characters and rediscovering it all after a year. This is such a big and beautiful story. About love, war, poverty, injustice, freindship, hate etc etc It’s one of those films with so many themes and aren’t these the best kind?
“How could I help loving you? You have all the passion for life that I lack. But that kind of love isn’t enough to make a successful marriage for two people who are as different as we are.”
