Titanic
**1️⃣8️⃣MOVIES FOR THE FIRST 18 YEARS OF MY LIFE
——————————————————
Part 9️⃣ ~ “Titanic” 🚢🧊💎🕰️🌊🛟
Age: 9**
9️⃣ Titanic was the film that made me fall in love with films. As this list proves, i always loved movies, but Titanic was the one that made me realize i want to make movies.
9️⃣ Another VERY MEMORABLE first watch movie. So, i vaguely knew about the existance of this movie from Cinemagique (at Disney). And in that show we see the scene where Jack is handcuffed as the ship is sinking. And one night my parents were watching Titanic and it was during the second half of the movie. And i watched for a couple of minutes and i recognized the scene with Jack handcuffed. Unfortunately i had to go to bed after some time cuz it was late, but my parents told me we have it on DVD and i could watch it the second morning (cuz that would also mean i could watch it from the beginning, since i joined them after the halfway mark). But i had to go sleep before Rose rescued Jack and i couldn’t wait to find out if she saves him and i asked my mother “Does he die?” and she said “Do you really want to know?”. I obvi said no and went to bed.
9️⃣ And the next morning… i OBVIOUSLY watched the full movie on DVD and fell in love with it. And was so shocked that Jack DID die, just not how i thought (trapped in that room).
9️⃣ This was the first FILM film that i loved. Like a critically acclaimed, amazing movie. Well directed, well written, great cinematography etc etc. And i also loved the fact that it was long. Such a big story (tho it takes place during only 4 days). But i still rewatched it almost weekly for a time, so obvi it didn’t bore me. This might also be the movie that made me really appreciate well written characters. I LOVED LOVED LOVED Rose (she still is one of my fav fictional characters). I saw myself so much in her. And i still want to be somewhat like Jack (but not quite THAT much). I actually want to be like both of them combined.
9️⃣ This was, as most of the movies on this list (especially the early ones), another one that i rewatched A LOT. I even remember my dad passing through the living room one time when i was rewatchinf Titanic and asking me “you’re watching this movie AGAIN?!?”.
9️⃣ I think a lot of kids went through a Titanic phase (not the movie, the actual ship). And so did i, but specifically bc of the movie. And i even got to go to the Titanic museum and to the port where it set sail from a couple of years ago. And recently i got to visit the real life Jack’s grave.
9️⃣ And i also wanted to watch A Night to Remember SOO badly, but i didn’t get to watch it then and i still haven’t.
9️⃣ Also this movie might have (it definitely did) an influence over me loving period pieces now. From the sets to the costumes.
9️⃣ DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE COSTUMES. ROSE LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE APHRODITE. KATE IS SO BEAUTIFUL. AND EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HER DRESSES IS TO DIE OR TO KILL FOR. Her “i’m flying” dress made me want to wear a shawl for so long (and now i wear some occasionally).
9️⃣ The score is INCREDIBLE and i obviously had an obsession with “My heart will go on” when i was a kid. Used to sing it all the time in my balcony.
9️⃣ This was also the first nudity i’ve seen on film. And i even drew the drawing a year after i first saw this film. And i still have it. It’s not great, but it’s a nude drawn by 10 yo me.
9️⃣ And this movie also taught me what “whore” means…
9️⃣ I remember also trying to hold my breath for as long as Rose does when she goes underwater. And i always failed. BUT today i succeeded (i’ve been doing breathing exercises for almost 4 years now, so it does feel like cheeting cuz it was super easy this time).
9️⃣ Surprisingly tho i wasn’t afraid to go on a ship or smthg like that after seeing this movie. I thought seeing it in 3D (cuz i also had the 3D DVD) was going to change that, but it didn’t. (Later not even 4DX made me scared of boats.)
9️⃣ Let’s talk about the lie of my life… “Titanic 2”. We all saw the fake trailer. Did anyone believe it? I did :D I was a child, wanted a sequel and the trailer didn’t look that hard to believe. There was a ship, there was Leonardo DiCaprio being brought up from the water… And i convinced everyone around me “Titanic 2” is happening cuz of that trailer…
9️⃣ To clarify: now i DON’T want a sequel to this movie. I mean, we won’t get any, but i still would hate to have one. Perfect movies (with VERY VERY few exceptions) DON’T NEED SEQUELS!!
9️⃣ And bc i found out the trailer was fake i think i also believed for a while that the alternative ending is also fake(?) What’s for sure is that i only later found out about that one and watched it. I kinda forgot how that ending went, but i like the one we got so i don’t need the other one.
9️⃣ To put into perspective how much i still love this movie, Titanic was on my first ever Letterboxd top 4 when i first downloaded the app in 2021. And i still occasionally put it in my top 4 (i just readded it rn).
9️⃣ I later found out this movie isn’t considered THAT good bc it’s not really James Cameron’s usual style and it became so popular and loved by the general public that people consider it basic now and not artsy. Such a shame… but i don’t care.
9️⃣ I also got to see this masterpiece in theaters for its 25 years anniversary rerelease (in 4DX) and it was such a cool experience. Watching your fav films on the big screen>>
9️⃣ Now i can’t rewatch this movie as often cuz it’s so heartbreaking. NOT BC OF JACK!! Bc 1500 ppl died. I cried so much today when i rewatched it (even from the opening scene with THAT OUTSTANDING SCORE).
9️⃣ THIS FILM IS MUCH MORE THAN A LOVE STORY. Sure, the first half IS a love story (and an amazing one). It almost feels like two movies in one. I love the first half a lot, as a romance movie. Rose being saved (in every way that a person can be saved) by Jack. It’s such a cute story. But the second half is a social commentary. But i only realized this later (definitely not at 9).
9️⃣ And it’s so incredibly heartbreaking. Sure, we follow Rose and Jack as they try to survive, but we also get to see how everyone on the ship is struggling. The father lying his daughters they’ll see each other again. The mother making sure her kids die peacefully asleep. The woman at the end crying and asking if there are more survivors lists. THIS IS AN AWFUL AWFUL STORY.
9️⃣ And don’t even get me started in the social class commentary. “Will the lifeboats be seated according to class? I hope they’re not too crowded.” STFUUUU. And the way the third class passengers were locked on the lower decks, as if they were disposable, as if they weren’t human.
9️⃣ Another sad thing is Jack and Rose’s goodbye. That’s the first (and only) time they say “i love you”. Cuz they know they might die. That also happens in real life and it’s quite sad. We don’t tell the people we love that we love them until it’s too late.
9️⃣ AND how he lied to her that the boats are coming for them (cuz he didn’t actually know that they were) in order to make her feel safe. SOBBING!
9️⃣ And also i love that (and cry when) we see the photos from Rose’s life, and see that she did everything she promised Jack she would do with her life :’)
9️⃣ I want to get this out of the way: NO, THERE WASN’T ENOUGH ROOM ON THE DOOR! Yes, Jack could have fit next to Rose, but they would have been too heavy and the door would have sunk. And giving the lifevest to Jack wouldn’t have helped that much either, cuz he didn’t sink, he died of cold. And that vest wasn’t going to keep him warm that much. Plus, Jack HAD to die for the story, for Rose’s story. He came into her life, he changed her for the better and he left.
9️⃣ Don’t even get me started on the heartbreak of passing time. Old Rose remembering Jack and everything she’s been through… her past… her youth… I’m so afraid of time and nostalgia will kill me.
9️⃣ “This was mine.” AAAAAAAAA!!
9️⃣ And no, i don’t want to talk about the fact that Jack only lives in her memory, from 84 years ago. Rose DID fall in love again, but she never fully moved on from Jack…
“When the ship docks…
I’m getting off with you.”
