Igby Goes Down
Igby: I'm going to California. I need f☆cking sunny day.
I will start by saying igby goes down follows Jason "Igby" Slocumb Jr a seventeen year old boy who is the epitome of lost, just kicked out of his school he is sent to military school he starts working for his godfather. The film is a journey of loss longing and identity as a boy who is unable to escape the expectations of a family of wealth but the cracks and trauma within a mentally ill father and dying mother and a older brother that he’s constantly compared to that he has to live up to that he doesn’t want to be apart, which results in anger and rebellion.
Igby covers his feelings up with sarcasm and humour but we can see that emotional turmoil he is stuck in the hatred towards others as he doesn’t know what to do as he can’t stop the way he is he is plunging further into something he can’t get out. We see this lost scared seventeen year old boy who is losing everyone around him still being a teenager but needing to also grow up at the same time, the transition from childhood to adulthood is extremely present throughout the film.
*Jason Slocumb: You see it, Igby? I feel this great, great pressure coming down on me. It's constantly coming down on me. It's crushing me.
*
Igby goes down is a very well developed film of unspoken feelings and words just like the characters too they are complex they have emotions parts we don’t see much of but are vaguely mentioned adding depth but also something to relate to we can understand them, feel for them, want so much for them. I personally feel, for igby I want him to leave I want him to have a life but i also want him to have someone who understands him for him to understand them the help, structure, and love he needs but also deserve not taking his character face on but the pain, suffering and expectations he’s endured from a young age.
I will end this review by going back to what I said in my first review, this film is one I believe is the closest thing you can get to The catcher in the rye I read it last summer and personally it was the first time a piece of literature has made such a impact on my life the first time I’ve felt something so extremely deeply I longed for a film of the book or even something like it and this is the closest thing to it the similarities between igby and Holden Caulfield are as if they are the same person the film definitely captures the same emotion and atmosphere as the catcher in the rye. I would say I feel this film deeply too the acting atmosphere and dialogue are felt just as deeply individual.
Igby: They are rigid and they are cold! And you don't know! They are cold, cold, cold to the f☆cking bone!…
…I'm scared.
