Frankenstein
After watching this again at home, I still can’t believe I was lucky enough to watch this alone in an empty cinema. This was truly meant for the big screen. I’ll forever be grateful for that experience.
Ever since I first heard about this adaptation being in the works, I was nervous to see it. I always knew my expectations were going to be too high, and I always knew I was going to be overly critical of it. The text is so dear to me, and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve reread it. Yet, finding out that Del Toro would be directing was like a breath of fresh air. I placed my trust in him and I knew he would handle this with a unique sort of care. While vastly different, this was a masterpiece, true to the original in some places, and unique to Del Toro’s style in a way that truly reinvents the classic. I’ve come to realise that the original can never be replicated exactly, especially not in film, and after seeing this, I’ve realised that an exact replication was never what I wanted at all. I hope Frankenstein continues to be adapted and perceived in many ways as time goes on. It’s a truly magnificent tale and Del Toro’s take on it was spectacular. Thank you.
