Columbus
My biggest problem with this movie honestly is that it ended instead of continuing to reflect all of my pain back at me for the rest of time. This is one of the best films I’ve ever seen, one of my favorites I’ve ever seen. What a way to start the year. I have not seen anything before that pulled feelings out of me like Columbus does. A shot of two people on a bench made my stomach hurt. A scene of a character explaining marginalia was so interesting that I watched it twice. There is understated and then there is Columbus, which is quiet but also bursting at the seams. It understands me more than I can even explain. I understand it, as well, I think: What we build will eventually be left behind. But that architecture can stand tall, like a gorgeous Modernist building, for hundreds of years to come. Maybe to be talked about by Casey, or to heal Jin. Something like that. I love these characters. I am very, very attached to them. Casey, Jin, even Gabe who gets only a few scenes. I don’t know how to explain this! I don’t even know if I recommend it because it is so very personal to me. But it is just so very perfect. Can’t believe this was in the world for so long before I knew it.
