The Doom Generation
“life is lonely, boring and dumb.”
a “heterosexual” movie by gregg araki is an alienating road-trip as a symbol of emotional and cultural decay. the “welcome to hell” symbol at the start is definitely my favorite foreshadowing of this film and also the last names of the characters; xavier red, jordan white and amy blue which leads towards the ending.
the film’s presentation of violence and intimacy is equally provocative as its explicit scenes. the film is less about the story because they just keep falling into even worse scenarios as they go. it’s more about the emotion, particularly the emptiness and rebellion of the three characters. one more film and i’ll finally finish gregg araki’s teen apocalypse trilogy. is there any film where james duval can have a break?
