When I watched Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, I wasn’t very familiar with Pasolini as a director and mostly approached the film through its shock value. I feel like that film deserves a rewatch now, especially after experiencing this incredible one.
Teorema is a film that asks a fascinating question: What happens when God temporarily erases your misery through sex, and then simply disappears? There are many possible interpretations to this film, but that one is by far the most interesting to me, and easily my favorite.
The camera work was beautiful, just as I remembered from Pasolini’s work. So many different and unconventional techniques. Intimate close-ups, distant framing, completely static shots, and shaky handheld shots. All of these choices added immensely to the film’s atmosphere.
Overall, this was a deeply strange and striking artwork for me, and definitely a film that opened the door to exploring more of Pasolini’s films. Something I now really want to do.
