Supergirl
“It doesn’t mean you can be tough. It doesn’t mean you have to be nice. You just have to be good.”
One of my favorite movies of the year. Every time I watch it, the more I get enthralled by it. Milly Alcock is an absolute star in this movie as Kara. She just gets her so well. I love this adaptation of Kara. She’s so fucking cool and perfectly contrasts Clark. I love how flawed and layered Kara is as a character. This film is a character study of Kara and who she is as a person & Craig Gillespie just plays into that extremely well as he’s a master of character study in film. Phenomenal direction from him as expected because I loved I, Tonya, Cruella and Dumb Money.
The entire cast is really great. I love seeing David’s Superman as always. Really great little cameos. I thought Eve Ridley as Ruthye was a really great character as well. She had her own little arc & I thought it was superb. I really liked Matthias Schoenaerts’ portrayal of Krem as well. I know most people don’t really think he’s a great villain, but I thought he was really scary and intimidating villain and it made me love to hate him. Jason Momoa was really great as Lobo. I thought he captured the character insanely well & am excited to see more of the character if they give us more of him.
I was genuinely impressed with Ana Noguiera’s script cus for a feature film scriptwriting debut, I thought she knocked it out of the park. I really loved her writing for Kara. The emotional beats genuinely hit really fucking hard & that was because of her great script writing. And the comedy in the script was really great too. I really loved the comedic timing. It was a very loose adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow and I really appreciate that because not every adaptation has to be 1:1. I also really loved the pacing in the film. The runtime just flew by with every rewatch of the film.
I also really love the cinematography and color grading in the film. The cinematography is so beautiful in so many shots. I also really love the world building of all the planets. It takes us from planet to planet & I love seeing the set pieces for each planet & all the creatures and inhabitants on each planet. I thought the editing was really good. As expected from Tatiana S. the editor of I, Tonya & Cruella and Fred Raskin, co-editor of the Guardians trilogy, Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and many more. I thought the CGI was a bit wonky at times, but not nearly bad enough to take me out of the movie. Superman also had wonky CGI and nobody seemed to mind that either.
I know most people on here don’t really like the film or rate it very low and that’s okay (depending on what your criticisms are), but I genuinely adore it. I’m really excited to see it at least one more time next week. It’s just that damn good to me.
I highly recommend it. Please see it on the biggest screen that you can. It may be too late for IMAX screenings cus Minions are taking over those screens soon, but if they’re still showing it in XL at AMC or any premium format screenings near you, please go see it. The movie needs your help at the box office.
