Avengers: Infinity War
Rewatched with Livi on her Marvel journey. She noticed how all the storylines are structured around the same motif, sacrificing loved ones for the greater good (or refusing too). Thanos is willing the sacrifice Gamora and half the population for his ultimate goal. Cap refuses to “trade lives”. Loki and Thor, Quill and Gamora, Gamora and Nebula, Dr Strange and Tony, Wanda and Vision all encapsulate this motif. The good guys won’t sacrifice and the bad guy will. Thanos only respects the characters with the willingness to sacrifice for their believed greater good, Quill for trying the kill Gamora and Wanda for killing Vision. Thanos’s utilitarianism vs the avenger’s (specifically Caps) Moral Absolutism is interesting. To be fair to Thanos he is very morally consistent. Not really sure what the film is trying to say though, as Thanos wins it’s kinda saying that you have to sacrifice to win? Or perhaps that self-sacrifice is the only sacrifice that ethically allowed
Livi also noted the Greek tragedy feel. The heroes try avoid their inevitable fate.
