Stalker
Oh, boy.
Where do I even start?
Where can I even start?
I'll ramble my way through this one.
Visually, immaculate. Every shot of Stalker is gorgeous. The sepia tone opening just looks like it was soaked in gold, and that imagery is only made more visually striking when the film switches over to full color.
The film is dream-like, and while I admittedly don't understand every piece of symbolism or allegory, I can recognize that they were made with purpose and intent, and that only makes want to dive even deeper into the movie.
I love how Stalker only gives information it thinks the audience absolutely needs. That shows confidence, and it pays off. It forces us to pay more attention to every detail, and try to connect the dots that the movie intentionally didn't connect for us.
I need to watch Stalker again, and anyone who hasn't seen it should watch it, at least once.
It's about so many things: Faith, Hope, Family, the Environment, the Government, and probably so much more that I couldn't scrape together from my first viewing.
I'll warn you that it's a long movie, and it does feel long, but it's worth it, even to just see how you feel when it ends.
I finally understand all of the comparisons between this and Annihilation, and my goodness, I do not think we'll be talking about Annihilation thirty years from now in the same way we can about Stalker.
