Sinners
I was scared to rewatch this film. I wasn’t worried that I would like it less then when I originally did. Instead I felt that I, for lack of a better term, could not handle it. The movie was too good and that rewatching it only 1-2 months later would be too much peak cinema for my brain to handle.
I thought about the first half of the movie where the twins pick up the rest of the cast. Lots of smiles. Lots of joy. Maybe another reason was that I didn’t want to see that happiness knowing how the movie goes. (To be honest, I don’t like thinking about the game series Mass Effect because of that reasoning. I don’t want to remember those characters because I know how it all ends).
I jumped in at different points. The first being when Smoke and Stack were waiting on the property owner and the second being when they see Delta Slim at the train station. I jumped in a third time and see the Smoke and Annie scene. The song that plays in the background titled “Why You Here” kept me from leaving again. The strings sound like what it feels to remember. It then transitions to the song’s second half “Before the Sun Went Down”. You see Bo and Grace get into the car to leave to the juke joint. Then you see everyone else make the preparations. The song has that familiar melody from “Last Time (I See the Sun)” which is the song that plays as the epilogue ends. It’s a song I’ve replayed probably 100 times plus at this point. A song so somber yet joyous in its messaging.
That’s when I knew I had to stay and rewatch it. Sinners is a nearly flawless film and is one of the best films of the decade and probably will be on many top 10 lists by decades end. It’s probably one of all time favorites too.
