Silence
I am in awe of scorsese’s ability as a filmmaker.
It is a long and painful journey but it is made in such a way that you an not watching it but living it with the characters.
Some of the most amazing shots and imagery I’ve seen. The movie is so tragic and you feel the characters overwhelming pain so viscerally but every shot somehow looks beautiful. The locations and sets are amazing and the actors all give perfect performances especially garfield. Scorsese’s ability to show the struggle of keeping faith under the most intense circumstances imaginable and the line between morality and faithfulness is incredible. When we finally meet with Neeson’s character at the end of the movie and learn what he has done you can tell that garfield’s character is at the lowest he could ever be and when he finally breaks you can tell how much it hurts him. He never gives up the faith but he realizes that denouncing it is the only way he can truly live his faith as a christian.
It feels like each persons view of the film could be very different depending in their stance on religion. I feel like my current view of it reflects how I currently feel about faith and who knows how my view of it will change overtime.
I haven’t had a film leave me feeling and thinking like this in a while.
One of the best made movies I have ever seen.
