Frozen II
okay so this one? a spiritual awakening. a fever dream. an existential crisis in song form. like if frozen was about self-acceptance and sisterhood, frozen 2 was about trauma, colonial guilt, and doing therapy in the forest with magical spirits.
first of all, the animation??? absolutely unreal. like the water horse? the autumn leaves? elsa’s hair physics?? the way they made wind a character?? disney said “we have money and we’re gonna show you.” and they did.
the soundtrack? unhinged in the best way. “into the unknown” had me yelling into the fridge at 2 am, but “show yourself”? no. that was THE moment. that song transcended space and time. it said: “meet your inner child, hold her hand, and cry.” and we did. together.
but i’m not gonna lie — i don’t fully know what was going on plot-wise. like there’s a dam? and a cursed forest? and elsa becomes like… the spirit of nature?? meanwhile anna’s solving colonial history puzzles and kristoff is out here singing a full-on 80s breakup ballad to himself like he’s in a queen music video. (and it was iconic. “lost in the woods” deserves a grammy.)
also the parent trauma in this one?? disney needs to calm down. why are we out here uncovering family lies and confronting generational responsibility like we’re not just trying to vibe with cute snowmen and reindeer.
but honestly? frozen 2 didn’t have to go that hard. and yet it did. it was confusing, beautiful, sad, empowering, and weirdly educational. not better than the first, but it hit in a very different way. 8.7/10 because it made me feel things i wasn’t ready for.
