Poor Things
no bc what the hell did i just watch… like i don’t even know how to describe this movie without sounding absolutely unhinged but omg i LOVED it. like it’s disgusting and weird and kinda pervy and super feminist and actually so profound and somehow SO FUNNY like what was going on 😭i’ve never cringed, laughed, paused, and whispered “what is going on” this much during a single movie. this was like a victorian fever dream directed by a feral toddler with a phd in feminist theory. emma stone was insane (in a perfect way), the visuals were wild, and mark ruffalo… oh my god. i will never see him the same again.
emma stone… my god. she committed. like full body full soul full spirit committed. bella baxter is literally the weirdest most iconic woman i’ve ever seen on screen. she said “i want to discover the world through pleasure and curiosity and not shame” and then just proceeded to do exactly that. like she was running around europe doing the most insane things and it was beautiful??
the accents. the walking. the men being like “no bella you can’t do that” and her just doing it anyway. when she went “i must go punch that baby” and she was so serious. also the way she kept saying things like “you may play with my body now.” girl what 😭😭
willem dafoe looked terrifying but slayed. mark ruffalo was absolutely hilarious and so unserious. like the way he was begging her to not go to medical school bc she was too slutty for science or whatever he said. and she was just like okay lol bye. ICON.
also i love how the sex in this movie isn’t even sexy — it’s like a philosophical tool. bella has no shame. no filter. no conditioning. just curiosity. and the movie leans into that HARD. it’s not for the faint of heart. but it’s brilliant in the most cursed, hilarious, cringey way.
and like under all the chaos and nakedness and weird walking there’s actually such a smart message??? like about autonomy and freedom and power and how the world constantly tries to control women and bella just chooses to exist on her own terms. she literally rewrote the meaning of being “alive” and “human” and “free.”
also this movie had the audacity to be visually STUNNING like every frame looked like a painting??? the colour palette??? the production design??? and it still had the most unhinged dialogue of all time. i don’t know how they pulled it off but they did.
rating: 9/10 — this movie made me laugh, squirm, cringe, and overthink everything. i left it emotionally exhausted, mentally deranged, and in awe of bella baxter’s commitment to chaos and pleasure. a feminist frankenstein fairy tale gone absolutely off the rails.it's messy, unhinged, uncomfortable, hilarious, grotesque, kind of brilliant. not for everyone. but definitely for me.
