The Notebook
okay, this movie is like the blueprint for all emotional, cry-your-eyes-out romance movies. like, you know it’s gonna wreck you from the start, but you watch it anyway because it’s so good.
first of all, ryan gosling and rachel mcadams? INSANE chemistry. like, every single scene they’re in together just feels so real. the way noah looks at allie like she’s the only girl in the world?? unreal. he sets the bar so high it’s actually a problem. and don’t even get me started on the “if you’re a bird, i’m a bird” scene because that did something to me.
but here’s the crazy part—apparently, ryan and rachel hated each other during filming. like, they didn’t get along at all, and honestly? you would never guess it. the tension between them is so electric, you just can’t look away. it’s like they had so much real animosity that it made their scenes feel even more raw and intense. it’s insane how much their real-life drama fed into the story and made it feel that much more believable.
but honestly, this movie is so frustrating too. like, allie’s mom hiding the letters?? actual villain behaviour. i was screaming at the screen. and then when allie almost chooses the rich guy who, yes, is nice, but like… he’s not noah?? please. you could literally feel how much they still loved each other, and the whole “it wasn’t over. it still isn’t over.” moment??? cinematic perfection. it literally broke me. it’s everything you want to hear from someone who truly loves you, like noah just knows. when he says that, it’s not just about their past, it’s about everything they could have been, everything they still are. and the way he says it, so desperate and intense, just kills me every time. it’s like he’s trying to remind her of what they shared, that no matter how much time has passed, or how many things have changed, they’re still it.
and then, just when you think you’ve emotionally recovered, you remember the older versions of them. like, noah reading to allie even when she doesn’t remember him?? her having that one moment of clarity before forgetting again?? nope. i was gone. finished. completely destroyed.
10/10 because it hurts but in the best way. it’s like the ultimate love story, but it also makes you question if love like that even exists, and i don’t know if i should be happy or just sad forever.
