Thief
You know that feeling when you watch a movie and you walk away genuinely so happy because of how good it was? This is one of those movies for me.
Let’s start this off by saying this score might be my favorite of all time. The hypnotic rhythms and heart-pounding synths create a futuristic, but classic neo-noir sound design that serves as a character of its own. Combine that with the breathtaking shot selection to make this one of the coolest aesthetics to ever grace a movie screen. An absolutely immersive viewing experience in this dark, gritty, atmospheric world that just traps you in all of its tragedies and its beauties.
James Caan glued me to the screen with a performance that is so raw and layered, quietly creating one of the coolest but also most tragic characters I have ever seen. His expressions speak volumes, as he shows so much emotion often not even saying a single word. Such rare authenticity and subtlety that I feel like is hard to come by nowadays, especially in a role like this with such high stakes at hand. Similar praise to the score, Caan’s performance is seriously one of my favorites ever.
And don’t even get me started on that ending. Perfect pacing the whole movie leading up to it, finishing with one of the most badass final sequences ever, and capping off that amazing score with an absolutely killer electric guitar riff rolling through to the credits.
Even in the environment in which I watched this was perfect given the vibe of the movie. Dark room, late at night, rain pouring outside on one of the only rainy days I’ve had here in my month and a half in Rome. Only negative is this shit box of a hotel. See u soon Madrid lol
This review took me way too long to write, and I still feel like I have not put all my thoughts to words in the way I intended to. This is a masterpiece. This has truly changed the way I look at movies. I cannot recommend this enough. Comfortably enters my top 4 favorites.
