Dexter
Rooted in the Czech New Wave’s taste for the surreal and unsettling, it feels closer to a cursed fable than any romanticised Disneyfication love story.
It maintains the darker tone, the strangeness, the sense that the Beast’s world is genuinely dangerous. There’s no softening of his appearance or personality, he’s frightening, animalistic, and unpredictable. The enchantment feels more like a curse than a metaphor, and Beauty’s time in the castle has a kind of dreamlike dread, capturing the true spirit of the original - mysterious, moral, and a little uncanny.
