Almost Famous
I went into this knowing about Cameron Crowe’s love for music and his approach to movie’s to reflect that love and I thought this movie did an amazing job reflecting it. The movie itself was a beautiful carefree vision of what it must have been like to live like a rockstar during the time and Crowe’s passion for the music oozed out of every scene
Within this love for music the deeper message that I interpreted was that the status of who you are or what you are chasing can hurt the people around you and to be careful of it. I think that dynamic is seen between William’s home life, William’s stint with the tour and their fear of their image being ruined, and everybody’s relationship with Penny Lane. No matter what your ambitions for yourself are if they come at other’s expenses or putting yourself first it will never be as fulfilling as you make it out to be. I think that is a beautiful message to be intertwined with the carefree rockstar lifestyle the movie embodies
Lastly I am writing this to keep track but I have seen two Cameron Crowe movies (this and Vanilla Sky) and I have noticed a pattern of love interests with little unique personality traits or a mysteriousness to them and I wonder if that is just a signature of his to put more emphasis of the male star’s journey or if it is simply and accident. I am only writing this because one of my professors recommended Elizabethtown mentioning the same dream perfect female protagonist with less of a personality and as more of a supporting figure the way Penny Lane was in this movie or Sofia in Vanilla Sky
