A Complete Unknown
“He not busy being born is busy dying.”
Here are the thoughts on my most anticipated film of 2024. In this monumental performance in A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet was able to embody the spirit and soul of the complicated artistic figure known as Bob Dylan. Chalamet became Dylan through his voice, dialect, cigarette smoking, guitar strumming, harmonica playing, and, most importantly, his attitude. Dylan is a rebel in every sense of the word. But while the world criticizes him, he continues to be originally himself. The scene that encapsulates Dylan’s attitude was during the Newport Folk Festival, which was spectacular and enthralling.
From Monica Barbaro to Edward Norton and Boyd Holbrook, each actor doing their own live singing was a sensational achievement. As a massive Bob Dylan fan, I really appreciate James Mangold's approach to telling this story and Timothée Chalamet‘s immaculate performance. Overall, this is a film about an artist refusing to stay confined within a box, the expectations of the fans, media, and the community that opens its arms to him. Although the world wanted Dylan to be a certain way, this film is about staying true to your artistry during a changing time. A Complete Unknown is now my favorite music biopic and my favorite film of the year. I love this movie! Oscar incoming for Timmy! 5/5.
Ps: the packed theater started applauding the film after it cut to black and Like a Rolling Stone started playing. That was awesome.
