Look Back
"Then why do you draw, Fujino?"
After watching Look Back last week I simply couldn't stop thinking about it, something about this charming story kept dragging my thoughts back to it so I decided to have a rewatch. I'm very glad I did, as it provided an elevating experience and one I some how enjoyed more.
This beautiful homage to a giant of modern manga in Tatsuki Fujimoto serves not only as a perfect tribute to his work but also as a tribute to the fun and joy of the creative process. It holds high the idea that the company is more important than both the journey and destination. While creating art can be both a tiresome and laborious endeavour Look Back reminds us of the good times, when an idea is formed, when a puzzle is solved or when a mountain is summitted. I find the film to be one of the most inspirational I have ever seen.
On a personal level I couldn't help but engage with its' messaging while simultaneously being moved through every emotion possible in only 50 minutes. To put it simply it really affected me on a level that I never thought it could.
The question "why do you draw, Fujino?" sits prominently at the films conclusion, open ended and ready to be contemplated and answered by the Fujino's inside all of us.
Sorry if this review makes no sense to anyone but me, I'm literally crying rn.
