A Clockwork Orange
I was cured alright.
What an insane movie. I loved every second of it though. Genuinely one of my favorite movies ever now, I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to see this absolute masterpiece by the GOAT Kubrick.
The opening scene is probably one of my favorite ever, it sets the tone of the movie perfectly. The soundtrack/score is also amazing. The score reminds me alot of the score in the Shining, but I guess it’s the other way around since this movie came out nine years before the Shining.
Although this is fiction, there is definitely some truth in all this, with the ending in mind. Reversing the experiment after Alex’s suicide attempt, because the politicians didn’t wan’t to look bad in the public eye. Publicly embracing Alex, and promising him a better future in exchange for his support and silence, after his attempt at ending his own life? It’s all about keeping a good public image right?
I’m not saying that Alex DeLarge isn’t a monster, but it’s clear that the institutions and prisons care more about obedience than morality. The film also shows that police are brutal and corrupt, the policemen who assulted him were his former gang members, they abuse their authority as officers of the law to torture and nearly drown him. The line between criminal violence and state violence is thin.
A society that destroys free will in order to eliminate evil, becomes evil itself.
