Moulin Rouge!
Firing on all cylinders. A masterpiece. First time watching it in probably 15 years? But before that I had easily seen it 50 times so it’s still a bit hard to approach it without the nostalgia goggles.
But I THINK I can see it clearly enough to say it fucking rocks so god damn hard.
I think why this and the other two in the ‘Red Curtain Trilogy’ work better than his later films is because—despite all the maximalism in the film making, the plot and structure here is so tightly written. Everything is clear and the songs are always used effectively. This goes against its reputation, I know, but it’s true! Watch this thing again!
In a just world we would have gotten 2 decades of McGregor/Kidman musicals
