Reminiscence

Journey To My Top 25: Letterboxd has made it clear that I’m in the minority on this one, and I don’t really care. I certainly get that this isn’t a flawless film, but I guess it’s a matter of personal preference. I haven’t seen this since theaters though, and I’m worried it won’t hold up.
Reminiscence has a very unique world setting and premise that I happen to mesh with. I also really like the look of this film for the most part: the nighttime shots are awesome and I really dig the vibe, but the daylight shots are hit and miss— but I do think it’s intentional that they look that way do due to the world setting. I absolutely live for Hugh Jackman’s voiceover in this film; it just puts me in the right headspace for this slow burn mystery and I happen to enjoy it.
I also think it handles the theme of memories, how they shape us, and how we handle them differently really well. I think the score is pretty good, effectively aiding the dark, dystopian tone. My favorite thing about this film though is how the mystery unravels; it may feel gimmicky, but everything in this film kinda is and it just works for me. I’m not saying it’s an excellent film, and I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone but it’s a personal favorite.
