Sinners
Juke joint more like freak joint.
Went in blind, knowing literally nothing about it but some of the cast - i didnt even know it was a horror movie... Admittedly a blunder bc holy shit I was not mentally prepared for that.
A sweeping collision of moralities, ideologies, and theologies. It truly feels like every relationship is real, meaningful, and complimentary. Each dynamic reflects a distinct moral tug-of-war - so much so that they dont just feel like character arcs but fully formed microcosms of the global conflicts the film is rooted in. Def a lot of rewatch value.
Coogler's directing style always has sm charisma and swagger, but in all of his movies I always feel like I have this cognitive phantom itch that can't be scratched by the time the film's done.
I wouldn't go as far to say MBJ's performance was noticeably exceptional, but it did remind me that he's lowkey not in that many movies. Would love to see him show up in more big projects (no more creed movies ftlog) bc hes always pretty magnetic (on screen that is, in interview it seems as though his handsomeness has come at the cost of a plain bread personality).
Btw I watched this like a week ago, so its possible my memory's a bit distorted and my lasting impression is overly glazy.
