Sleep
I may be fighting a cold / illness that has literally destroyed all motivation in my body but I can appreciate a damn good piece of cinema.
For some reason this showing had 12 minutes of adverts (no trailers) so people thinking they could be sneaky were stilling coming in 15 minutes into the film, phone torches on trying to find their row (it’s literally lit up on the floor). One woman kept being her phone out to take pictures of the opening logo (which she missed) and then take videos of the movie to put on Snapchat. She barely watched it. Woohoo, you told your friends you paid to sit in a cinema to see a movie you sat on your phone the whole time!. Congratulations!. I feel bad for the people around me who just weren’t appreciating the utter perfection projected in front of them.
It’s like a marriage of great acting, directing, writing, shot composition, editing, a dance if you will of all these components working together to tell this story. It’s got a lot in common with the first act of the Exorcist but it keeps playing with the questions “Is what happening Supernatural?” Or “Is it all in her head?” till the very last moment. Keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for that conclusion. It’s great at placing seemingly random pieces of information throughout the story that all come back in the last chapter.
So I’m now gonna be complaining that this wasn’t nominated or won anything at the Academy Awards this year because this deserved it.
