Crash
Don't think I've ever seen a movie so repressed yet so outwardly horny. Crash while not straightforwardly depicting the mind's of it's characters represents all their grief and isolation in such a unique way that it's hard to look away or even question what the characters are doing. Even without any of the characters just stating reasons for all their grievances you can see it in about every sexual act they partake in. Even from the opening scenes with James and Catherine trying to illicit something fresh into their hearts depicts this desperation to feel or even relive a particular emotion but as the movie goes along this desolation and desparity gets more and more extreme as the sex acts get more and more vulgar, it starts off simply with two characters having sex in a car to this group the cast finds themselves purposely injuring and disfiguring themselves to relive what was left of their selves before they all shared the common bond of car crash victims.
I think Cronenberg really depicted the way in which our lives and mental health could really influence the way we try to gratify ourselves wether that be through sex or other vices and utiluses the common thread of car crashes to depict the way in which specifically trauma has influenced the way these characters well fuck. With every act you can feel the attempts of these characters to just feel like they did before their crashes happened, something to feel normal again and not be left with this overwhelming emptiness that has led them to this vein, desperate life. This all accumulates in the ending where we start off where we began with James and Catherine participating in sexual acts to see if it can rejuvenate their failing marriage but while Catherine cries essential saying this car crash sex kink life hasn't changed anything, all James can do is continue which I think ultimately shows how far gone they are just to feel anything.
Cronenberg was really on a different level of freak with this one.
