"when i think of systems of oppression, uh, historically, in this country and elsewhere, they're durable. And they tend to reinvent themselves and they do it right under our nose"
it is very interesting that i decided to light candles before this started. it became increasingly evident that the candles were important, they brought reverence and that is how this documentary should be handled, a careful compilation of evidence proving racism is embedded in our system and how from the days of slavery it continues to disguise itself as necessary components of society - a massive prison complex and the growing militarization and presence of police. i thought as a someone who "knows about things" even someone who has already seen this i would be affected, but i was. i felt an overwhelming sense of dread knowing 1 in 3 black men will at some point end up in jail or prison. i thought of my black male group, we have been together since childhood, is it true there is a potential for 2 of us, me, to disappear for some time, for all time.
a lot to think about and a lot to dismantle, not reform.
