Inside Out
i might not have been ready to watch this movie at age 14 but now being almost 19 i truly understand the significance of it.
the depiction of the five primary emotions are shown to always work in a self preservation-type fashion. what is interesting is that all of the emotions want to make Riley happy- non more than the other. it’s interesting to think that in anger and fear, happiness is the main goal. which is counter to what i think society tells us. before watching this movie, one might assume that Joy is the leader because she might be the most favorable, but they all are equal. the plot of this movie, which is very good, and specifically the end is a good symbol of a young girl growing up and being able to expressamd use all of the primary emotions. it’s only until the end that we and Joy understand that Sadness, both the concept and the character, are important in actually achieving growth. this leads to the what i will identify as the creation of the first secondary emotions, Nostalgia. the beautiful imagery that shows the original core memories being blue and yellow. i think what would have been rly cool was if another manifestation (of nostalgia) was created for that end scene but it had the same effect with yellow and blue balls.
this is a very nice movie that combats the societal belief that joy is the most important thing. it gives a space for a sadness that opens up and heals. this movie also is created with the irony of “what if in the name of joy, we loose the ability to be joyful”
