Arrival
Wow...
This movie is astonishing in every way. I could talk about this film for hours and Denis Villeneuve is an absolute genius.
This movie surprises me every time I see it and now more than ever.
I am saying this because I made a discovery that blew my mind. This movie has a heavy focus on the concept of palindromes because it reflects the perception of time where you can see the past and the future.
Now hear me out: This movie is a palindrome! I don't know if this is done on purpose but if it is, this might me the greatest movie ever made.
Soooo, let me explain:
If you don't count the end-credits, this movie is exactly 1 hour and 50 minutes. Meaning that the middle of this movie is at 55 minutes. The last half of this film is just a mirrored version of the first half meaning that, if you would watch the movie on two different screen while one is playing normal and the other one is in reverse, the scenes that you would see on the two screens are an exact parallel to each other.
I hope this makes sense and if it doesn't, I have some examples:
Let's start at the beginning: The movie opens with a scene of Louise in her house while the song On The Nature Of Daylight is playing. The last scene of the film also starts with Louise in her house while On The Nature Of Daylight is playing.
10 minutes into the film, Louise gets confronted with the aliens for the first time during the scene where colonel Webes asks her to translate what the Heptapods are saying. 10 minutes before the ending, Louise solves the problem of China attacking the aliens by calling general Shaang and the Heptapods leave earth.
25 minutes into the movie, Louise goes in the spaceship for the first time and meets the aliens. 25 minutes before the ending, it's her last time visiting the spaceship when she realizes the purpose of the Heptapods.
37 minutes into the movie, she goes in the spaceship a second time (this time with a whiteboard to try to understand the aliens and obtain peace) while 37 minutes before the ending, she is in the spaceship with Ian right before it blows up, signaling the first act of war against the heptapods.
In the middle of the movie, Ian gives an explanation about what they know about the Heptapods. The scene before that, Louise is sitting by her desk while she suddenly gets a flash-forward to her child. In the scene after the explanation, the exact same thing happens.
These were some examples to clear it up a little.
In my opinion this is way to convenient to be a coincidence and if it is intended this way, I think that Denis Villeneuve is clearly the best filmmaker of all time!
