Sinners
Annie: There are legends of people... born with the gift of making music so true, it can pierce the veil between life and death. Conjuring spirits from the past... and the future. In Ancient Ireland, they were called Fili. In Choctaw land, they call them Firekeepers. And in West Africa, they're called griots. This gift can bring healing to their communities but it also attracts evil.
this quote is the backbone of the entire film imo**
One Year Anniversary For Me.
Man i love this Film so much like seriously one of a kind. The story immediately starts with that little prelude of Annie talking about how music can bind people together but can also attract Evil. As the Plot moves forward it becomes better and better simply because it perfectly balances show vs tell specifically through characters either when Stack is talking about their father or Delta Slim talking about his buddy Rice.
Jedidiah: You keep dancing with the devil... one day he's gonna follow you home.
I mean yeah, Ryan Coogler knows exactly what he’s talking about. Sammie with that guitar was exactly what extracted the devil, Remmick but instead he kept it and by abandoning his faith to play blues music at sinful, alcohol-fueled juke joints. He is telling Sammie that by stepping into those environments, he is inviting real danger into his life which costed him everyone he loved.
Delta Slim: See, white folks, they like the blues just fine. They just don't like the people who make it.
Again, how music itself affects people and the way they act but people are prejudiced towards the people who make it, i remember seeing a tiktok video about Jazz and the interviewer said “is jazz essentially black music” and the interviewee responded with “It’s not essentially black music. It’s essentially life”
and this film feels different like on a personal, spiritual and cultural level blending all them aspects together beautifully.
Stack: No doubt about it. Last time I seen my brother. Last time I seen the sun. And just for a few hours, we was free.
this film reminded so much of my 2025 Year of school…that was such a good endgame period
