Shrek
Seen this film a million times so I am dating this to the last time I saw it, an airing on Cartoon Network that I happen to remember because I went to a dinner party later that night and offhandedly mentioned I saw this earlier in the day - this is the same dinner party I met my partner at, so this is one of those circumstances where a movie plays a pivotal point on an important day in a way.
Shrek was a novel thing when it came out, a movie that took so many jabs at not only Disney but the film world around it, both a product of its time and yet timeless enough that it still really holds up today. You see Fiona go for a mid-air kick and it spins like The Matrix and you don't question it because it's still funny even outside the reference. You don't need to know Farquaad is a reference to Michael Eisner, the Disney CEO, but you know Farquaad is an asshole nonetheless. Goes to show that good writing can keep a movie like this from feeling dated, a skill that is so rare it almost seems forgotten in film today. I understand why a lot of people probably scored this so high for the meme, but I think we often forget that this proved someone could challenge Disney in the animation world at a level that wasn't seen in quite some time - and to me that deserves applause.
