Sinners
Before I saw this movie I heard so many great things, I was just hoping I wouldn't be let down. I can say for certain this movie didnt let me down at all. It was as good as advertised from start to finish. Great performances, score/soundtrack, pace, and directing.
Ryan coogler has continued to prove why he's such a force in directing. He really doesn't miss. He is also showing how he can do so many different genres. Drama, sports, marvel, and now horror. But like his other movies and this one, its not pigeon hold into one genre. This movie has heart, while also being able to scare the shit out of you.
This movie takes awhile to get going, but it never feels boring. This is never a moment where your checked out. The characters are written so well, and completely engaging its a total blast from start to finish.
The themes tackled in the movie are quite beautiful, from the guitar showing what's sacred to the character of Sammie. But also what you should hold sacred. Don't let the outside world take from you, the culture and traditions should be sacred. This movie does a great job through the guitar and the music showing the importance of black culture to Ryan Coogler and why it should be sacred.
The score/soundtrack is astonishing, love hearing all the blues songs. It brought you back in time to another time period. Easily the best part of the movie for me.
Finally, great performances across the board. Michael B Jordan was great as both of the twins. My two favorite performances are from Del Roy lindo and Jack O'Connell. Del Roy Lindo was perfect casting showing this run down musician who enjoys life through drinking. You feel for his character, and root for him. But also had some of the better funny moments. Jack O'connell was excellent has the main villain vampire. Truly menacing and terrifying, and you believed every second of it.
My only complaints would be some of the humor didnt work. Or was misplaced in spots, but that's really nit picking. I would also add, it doesn't add a ton to the vampire genre, but it also doesn't need to.
In the end, get your ass to the theater!!
