It’s ambitions are for sure higher than its execution (undoubtedly at times a symptom of early 2000s premium cable style) but forever a fascinating and strange thing to me. Even for Schrader I think it could get darker, but maybe his darkness adds to the spiraling out of control in Bob Crane’s life towards the end. Spent a lot of the movie this time being like “oh wait did they darken Willem Dafoe’s skin a little or is it just his eyebrows?” Otherwise like a typical derangement-on-the-surface performance from him which hasn’t tired me yet. “Men gotta have fun” is one of the funniest closing lines of all time
