Highlights February 25

By chance, I came across a documentary about Sharon Stone on DR2: Sharon Stone: Survival Instinct. It offered a fascinating but also frustrating look at how Hollywood has treated—and likely still treats—female actors. It was a compelling watch and finally pushed me to see Basic Instinct, which I’d been meaning to watch for a long time. A powerful performance by Sharon Stone. I also watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets with the kids. It’s such a joy to experience these films with them and see their excitement through their eyes. These stories really are something special. Twisters was a decent disaster film, but I might have been a bit biased by my nostalgia for Twister (1996). It just didn’t quite capture the same magic for me, which nudged my rating down a bit. Teen Wolf had also been on my watchlist for a while—Michael J. Fox is always great—but I really wanted to like this one more than I did. The story had so much potential, but it ended up feeling too thin and cliché-ridden. A real shame. Last but not least, I finally watched an older Oscar winner: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. A tough watch, filled with people in different stages of personal crisis, where you can’t help but long for a happy ending. Now I’m ready to catch up on some of this year’s Oscar films. Anora, I’m waiting for you to hit streaming!
