Hereditary
It is now 24 hours after I've seen this movie and it is still effecting me greatly. This is single handedly the most terrifying film I have ever seen. It doesn't need jump scares. It doesn't rely on gore and shock value. This film doesn't keep making things happen for the sake of making its audience gasp. The score alone will build up so many emotions and fill you with utter terror from start to finish. It is not just a horror film, either. It is so much more. It's a highly dramatic film about family dysfunction.
The acting within this film is impeccable. Especially 3 performances from our main family: the work of Toni Collette, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro. Toni Collette gives the performance of her entire career and I am simply hoping award season is kind and recognizes her for the true cinematic art that is her performance in this movie. She was so raw and honest and her one monologue at the dinner table scene gave me a string of chills down my spine. Alex Wolff truly surprised me in his performance. I appreciated the way his character portrayed grief, it was a rare thing to see. Milly Shapiro blew me away and terrified me to my core and I was so surprised to find out that this was her first movie.
Everything about this film was done so impeccably I was in awe by the time the credits were rolling. Please for the love of God go see this film if you want to experience the direction that the horror genre should be going in. Truly, truly incredible. A24, you did it again!
