Obsession
Can’t see another 2026 movie beating this one. Hard to imagine another 2020’s beating it either. It is a great movie, with a great cast, and it gets its point across so great, and it manages to be subtle too. It’s overt, and tactful, and impressive. It’s an accomplishment, and a monument to indie films. The dialogue is naturalistic and there are lots of hidden bits that act as sprinkles on the sundae. Ian says “Carter even said something (about Bear and Nikki).” Nikki calls Bear “Baron” in the car when she says she’s sorry about his cat. Nikki says “I wanna eat you up, I wanna eat you up,” after she hits herself with the brick, and while lying with him says “Sorry for all the theatrics.” I guess everyone who makes a wish does die, but I don’t think that’s a monkey’s paw thing. About Bear’s wish not really coming true, with the line drawn between “Nikki” and whatever loves Bear more than anything in the world, I guess it is just a part of Nikki that existed but wasn’t prominent, and that she does not identify as part of herself. Otherwise, it’s just a conjured spirit, and there’s no reason to think about it that hard. Maybe messing with free will causes an entirely different set of rules to emerge, the fact that the CS representative could page in Nikki’s soul’s voice seems to lend itself to that. Anyway, good movie, touches the soul of the generation, is indicting and compassionate, and very, very funny.
When I went to the bathroom I saw IMAX Disclosure Day, maybe I’ll watch that next.
