A Different Man
Probably the only thing I will end up seeing at Sundance but I’m glad I got to see it at all! There are things here and there that maybe I’d prefer going differently, but in general I thought it was getting at something in the cultural zeitgeist in a way that was far more effective than its peers. Specifically I was thinking about Dream Scenario, though they aren’t inherently all that similar, but A Different Man feels like it has a lot more bite in what it’s trying to say while still reserving some soft empathy for just how sad this man’s life is at his own hands. It also benefits from the inclusion of a key character foil whose introduction at the midpoint of the film turns it from something that’s okay to something that really kicks ass.
