Mulholland Drive
Yea so I think I get the film? Maybe I do? I think the POINT of the film is to discover your own conclusion to the story and just exactly what you think you saw. This film doesn’t tell you what happens or what happened to really what is happening, but your supposed to figure it out yourself, and even tho most film have a true explanation, I believe this film is what you want to see and what you want to believe. David lynch probably has his own messed up explanation as to what the movie means, but I also think that David lynch himself just wants people to explore the mystery on their own. I don’t really want to watch any explanation videos because I want to watch the film the way David lynch intended, I trust that mastermind of a director, he knows how we are supposed to view his films. We’re not supposed to know.
All throughout the film, your just sitting there thinking, “I understand this” and although there is a few moments in the first half where your just a little confused and have to use your brain power, it is (mostly) a little more accessible for the normal movie viewer. There is a few moments of obscureness and bizarreness, but thats just a part of this dream feeling to the film, and that can be taken into consideration after the film ends and your just trying to piece together the film. The back half is when it starts to get wild, weird imagery, bizarre scenes, strange feelings, strange acting choices, and just overall starts to get confusing. If you haven’t watched the film and are going to, you’re gonna know the exact moment this happens. Your just kinda left there, trying your best to analyze. That’s when it gets crazy.
The opening to this film is one of my favorites in any film, I can’t quite remember if this is the first scene or just one of the first scenes, but when those two dudes are sitting there at the table and the one named Dan starts to explain this weird feeling he’s having about his dream and where they are at the moment. He specifically went to this breakfast place cuz it’s the one in the dream. He explains his dream out and they end up trying to recreate it in some sort. That’s crucial to the film imo, it’s the first moment of surrealism and I like to look back at that scene because (I’m not going to spoil anything for the film but it might be minor) it kinda comes into play when the film starts to get weirder and weirder. Once they play it out, it seems like his dream was true, kinda? He turns the corner and we get the very effective jump scare of this demon looking, dirty homeless lady, and that lady comes into play later as well.
Looking back at those effective little scenes that we get in the first half and you can really start to try and piece things together little by little but you can’t exactly figure it all out and what it all means. All the clues are there, it’s all laid out for you. But it doesn’t exactly make sense. And that’s the exact goal of David lynch, he wants you to have to think and analyze the film.
I’m gonna go into some spoilery talk real quick so just skip over this part of the review. ——————————^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^I wanted to talk about that club called “silencio” real quick. Cuz I believe that to be the turning point of the film, but also maybe even the main source of the narrative. It’s kinda like a Magician/singing/performing club or something of that sorts. When we first get introduced to it you (and the main characters) get this weird weird feeling and you just know something is wrong. The magician says something along the lines of “everything is a tape recorder” and kinda demonstrates some weird trick or whatever he was trynna do but idk. The weirdest part is when the magician does his little flashing blue light thing and then Betty starts shaking uncontrollably. I took this as he’s doing something weird to the two girls, and I think he’s the reason everything happened the way it did cuz he was kinda staring at Betty, or that’s what we’re supposed to think. Then some girl comes on stage and starts to sing, she is making everybody tear up but then she just faints out of nowhere, the singing continues as she’s unconscious. This plays into the “everything is a tape recorder” thing. I don’t really think anything before this has to do with this, but my first thought was that everything that went on in the film was off, or some sort of dream/maybe even a film being made. Because I noticed how when the main character was introduced, her words were off from her mouth and the dialogue really seemed pre recorded. That’s also when we meet the weird old couple that was accompanying her, then we see them again after everything goes wild and they get sucked into some sort of dream world/that blue cube or whatever in the world happened. They chase her when her name is now Dianne and she ends up shooting herself because of the fear, she’s now in the exact same spot as the lady we saw earlier in Dianne’s apartment that was dead. I’m not too sure if that was Dianne or just some different lady idk. I think Dianne plays a big part in this, well obviously she does. Cuz in this dream world, the girl who we called “Rita” is now Camilla. And the Betty that we knew is know Dianne. Im thinking maybe they switched positions in some weird way, or they took the place of someone less fortunate than them or someone that has everything in the world. I don’t know what we are supposed to think but that’s kinda what I think. Im thinking maybe “Rita” real name was either “Betty” or maybe she was “Dianne” or Camilla” and we just didn’t know because she lost her memory in the car accident. I guess that we are supposed to assume that she is “Dianne” and the neighbor was covering for her so she doesn’t get killed or jailed, whatever she did. Also it could just be that the whole film was in a dream state, the whole film besides the last 30 minutes felt like a dream. Dianne was dreaming and took the name of the waitress she saw “Betty” and Camilla was in her dream to fulfill her fantasy’s about her and wanting to be like her or even better than her, that’s why she’s attracted to her. The old couple that I already talked about, symbolizes her failure, she never made it big, people are bigger and better than her, she didn’t succeed. They represent her failure and she ends up shooting herself because of the thought of failure, it scared her so much that she couldn’t fulfill her fantasy’s about making it to the big screen and being a big movie star and a good actress. Camilla did tho, that’s why she dreamt up some weird fantasy about being the person to save her and help her. I also think maybe the blue cube plays a bigger part in it, maybe everything before in the film isn’t a dream necessarily but a alternate universe created from the cube. Maybe she got sucked up into it and just went with it, or maybe even she didn’t remember. That could also mean Camilla by accident got sucked up into the alternate universe, that’s why she can’t remember anything and that’s why she has a weird connection to the name “Dianne” because she sees Betty’s face and keeps thinking “Dianne” or something of that sort. Knowing David lynch, this could be everything and nothing at all at the same time. Truly an amazing filmmaker.
Alright I’m done talking about my weird little thoughts/analysis of what I took things as and what went through my mind/my take away of the film. I said some simple things about what stuff could mean but I also tried to dig deeper into the narrative to find my conclusion. Nobody read that but cool idc, I love sharing my thoughts to this app even if nobody reads it, it makes me feel better. Now I’m just gonna give a little review igThis film became one of my all time favorites from the moment the picture started moving. I truly fell in love with this film. It made me feel so much through its runtime, it made me think about things and it made me dig deep into the film. If it can do that, then it’s approved by me. The direction of this film is one of the best ever, David lynch is probably the best director of our time and maybe even my favorite oat.
Truly an amazing film. I feel like I said too much, but at the same time I feel as if I didn’t say enough. I hate that feeling. Amazing film
