Silence
An incredible visual exploration on redemption and what it means to have faith. I would really like to write a long review on this but I’m having trouble forming words for the experience this film put me through. An absolute brutal depiction on the persecution of Christian’s in Japan and how they forced Christian’s to renounce their faith, not because of their hatred for the religion, but out of fear for Japanese tradition. I believe this film is a journey of a broken man who can be seen as quite selfish. Throughout his journey he parallels his struggles with Jesus sacrificing himself which is imo a very selfish thing to do, as the Japanese Christian’s can’t conceive themselves anywhere close to Jesus sacrifice. This man is broken and he goes through a lot, a seriously tough watch for me, it was absolute disturbing. I find it very interesting how the argument was that nothing grows in a swamp, that the people of Japan can’t comprehend something as such the son of God, which is hard to believe but in context it makes very much sense, as father Ferreira explains how they symbolize the son of God with the actual sun and now they focus more on the sign of hope in a world so cruel much more than the actual salvation that comes through Christianity.
Instantly an all time favorite of mine, while being a tough watch this might be the greatest movie I have ever laid eyes on, I’ll definitely be rewatching this soon.
