Godzilla
No, I’m not just giving this a perfect rating because it’s the original. I’m giving it a perfect rating because despite its slow start and quality of technology, I think this is truly one of the greatest films to be put to screen. You just feel the immense passion and heart in this that’s been stripped soullessly in later adaptations of the story, ironically by America, the evil monster of a nation that godzilla was created to represent. (Their occupation and bomb testing in the pacific ocean post-Hiroshima and Nagasaki - not the bombs themselves like the common misinterpretation.)
As early as this is, the uniqueness in directing styles for simple dialogue scenes hasn’t quite evolved its charm yet, which is why many of the ethical questions are lost to a time when they would have only truly impacted the deeply heartbroken culture of Japan post WWII. But after the second half, the special effects are miraculously better and more charming than I’d expected them to be. A magnificent movie with (I would argue) one of the single greatest original soundtracks to be written for a movie.
I love the story of godzilla. THIS, Aidan, is what an anti-war film looks like.
