The Thing
This would be a tricky one to answer on doesthedogdie.com
Absolutely enthralled the whole way through this movie. I will go to my grave never knowing these two things: what David Lynch’s Eraserhead baby was made of, and what John Carpenter’s set looked like making The Thing. This would have been an absolute dream come true for everyone working on this, phenomenal acting, sets, wardrobe, effects, writing, directing… any person who could be on a film set has nailed their job here.
It’s clear that, knowing how many pieces of media this movie has inspired (Among Us being the most recent that comes to mind), there really just is something about this kind of movie that just affects people in a certain way. I don’t know if there’s any specific element or if it’s the totality of the pieces falling together that created the suspense, but this movie, despite having (I would argue) a fairly bland story - it being “which of us is the thing???” the whole way through - it manages to twist and turn small parts that revolve the entirety of the audience’s perspective and makes the single most compelling imposter narrative I have seen.
This, like every other I have given five stars, simply has everything that I think a movie should have.
