Thirteen
This just hit me so personally on so many levels. I didn’t know anything about this movie other than that it had been so much for a few people who were coming out with us that they decided to stay home instead.
It was so goddamn real though that was what made it so brutal. While I can’t say I have the lived experience of being a teenage girl, almost every element of this movie I felt like I had lived in some way (just not to the extreme of this movie), and I related so personally to the whole trying to be older and more mature than I actually am thing. So much so that this hurt to think about. The friendship between the two characters felt not specifically in exacts but in dynamic, exactly like a friend I used to idolise and make poor decisions because of, who I’m glad I’m no longer friends with.
Fuck this movie it’s so good it was so painfully real. I knew from the beginning when I thought to myself “yess they’re leaning heavy into the 2000s aesthetic I love that shit” that this was going to be a great movie. Even if it had ended before the climax in those last few scenes I would’ve still just thought “perfect”.
