Midsommar
A24, Ranked
I love this film.
Firstly i would like to mention the plot, which is incredibly intriguing and eery. I was almost dreading rewatching this film because I could remember how creepy it was on my first watch. Nothing changed. On my second watch - even though I knew everything that happened, it didn't alter the experience. Still just as creepy and f'd up as the first time.
The Cinematography in Midsommar is unbelievable - it's so beautifully shot and every frame could be a cult painting. It is like a visually striking nightmare, and I love it - definitely is some of the best cinematography I've ever seen in a film.
The acting is another one of the many strong aspects of this film, obviously the most notable being Florence Pugh who gives an outstanding performance. But all of the Harga just do an incredible job at creating the dark atmosphere for this film.
Another thing I would like to mention, that I noticed re-watching this film, is Ari Asters excellent use of foreshadowing. He literally shows you everything that is going to happen in the film, right at the start.
The attention to detail in this film is phenomenal, from the flowers on Dani's Crown expanding and shrinking and the subtle dreamlike swaying of the background to the way certain images can be seen in the trees. It all just goes to show how talented Ari Aster really is.
Midsommar is a masterwork in Horror. Surreal and a disturbing ride. Truly one of the best horror films of the last decade.
