Somehow Ryan Coogler said, “What if O Brother, Where Art Thou got bit by a vampire and then sang about it?” and honestly? I’ve never been more onboard with anything in my life. Michael B. Jordan playing both twin brothers, one smooth, one slightly feral, was already worth the ticket. But then you add haunted juke joints, bloodthirsty Klan vampires, and a blues musical number that summoned the ancestors?? Brother, I ascended. Yes, the plot wobbles a bit in the middle. Yes, the vampire lore makes you go “wait, huh?” once or twice. But who cares? It’s sweaty, stylish, spiritual, and absolutely cooking with genre sauce. Also, the scene where Stack fights off a vampire with a guitar riff should be studied in film schools and churches alike. Favorited. Because sometimes a movie is so FRICKING GOOD and you just gotta clap. IT WAS SO GOOD. BEST FILM SO FAR IN THIS YEAR!
