If there is no God...
>
Would it really make any difference.
I am an atheist and I honestly feel the entire concept of God to be quite stupid, but I understand why people worship God. There maybe many reasons,
For some, they never thought of an alternative.
For some they find comfort in believing that there is a higher power who will take care of them.
(And many more reasons)
The reason I am saying all this is because the film fundamental theme of the film is doubt.
I studied in a catholic school and they were very religious and my parents are hindus who also follow religious customs. So it's just natural that I myself believe in god but as I was growing up, doubt was started raising. I could not accept that even in the presence of a higher power which is all powerful, the world has not changed a bit. Yeah you might be thinking this guy is over exaggerating a bit but as far as I can remember this thought started when I was 13 and as I grew up doubt became belief that God does not exist.
This is the reason I deeply connect with this film.
Even if there is a god I honestly belief doubt will only bring you closer to God not further away from him.Only When you believe something without a second thought, you start becoming a fool. This is how some religious groups and cults control and manipulate you. They feed on your fear and only make it worse so you cannot think for yourself.
(Sorry for this shit)
The real review starts from here
This film is so simplistic in its approach but deeply meaningful at the same time. It leaves a mark on the viewer.
The film starts with a 11 minute sermon scene and you could see people of different ages attending it.
The entire story of the film is about the pastor and his doubt. He is a man of God but he is skeptical about him.
Tomas is a serious man who hardly even smiles during the entire duration of the film. He is on a search for answers and every other issue seems small in front of it. He says things to comfort people but he himself doesn't believe in them.
Pastors are shepherds who steer people in the right direction, they do the god's work but here tomas himself is lost and he can't find a way out. He thinks Mr persson is his way out. He talks to him about his uncertainty about God and kind of makes persson even more depressed than he actually is.
Tomas definitely is an interesting character.
My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

-Psalm 22:1, Mathew 27:46
The greatest battle jesus faced was not him being crucified but him facing doubt over his father, his creator. This was the peak of his psychological battle according to algot. Tomas tries to search meaning in a meaningless existence. He talks about God's silence in this world. That is why he asks persson if the world would really change if there is no God because it is surely not getting any better with him present.
I still think there are lot of things I might have missed which I would only get on a rewatch.
