First Reformed
The world is our home, our bodies are our world also. Little worlds that collide and interact but we as humans poison the world, ourselves, then try to amend the poison through religion will it be enough to reach heaven?
What an interesting movie, that’s for sure the thing this movie is. Interesting and makes you think. This movie hits on a multiple topics; the world, the horrible effect of climate change/oil/waste/pollution, religion, learned helplessness, absolving self through religion, genuine hopelessness and poison self harm. I felt the dread from the movie, it’s very present in its issues and doesn’t necessarily give you an answer.
The look of the movie is static, the world is cold lacking of colour except for rare moments. There’s times where things look too perfect, reminds me of catholic art along the church perfectly place but slightly off putting. Speaking of off putting this movie plucks on your nerves, not just in topics but there’s something off about everyone making you feel on edge. I watched this with my mom she was convinced Mary was a witch and I was defending her but i gave up because she might be a witch she might not but she is weird. So weird I flinched in the last scene.
A part I liked-aside from many-is the use of poisoning self. Self inflicted harm walking lockstep with the harm of the planet, the hopelessness eroding into self eating up the earth it’s beauty then cycling again into self harm it’s really interesting! It makes you feel depressed but also reflective of your own body. Idk the idea of the world is very enforced in this movie.
The movie from this director is what I usually like about some directors it’s not to make you feel closure but it more asks a question, it’s a person with a problem who is wondering what do we do? It’s a type of way making movies I really like it’s not trying to give you a happy ending but more of a personal reflection and worry of the artist. This movie is worried about the future, the dismissive nature of people, the self harm and cruelty that can come from staying here in the tar of misery but also the small glimmers of human connection that is desperate to remember not everything is awful do not blow your shit smoove off, stay alive even in pain. But I don’t know if it’s all positive….idk!
