Superman
been meaning to write a longer review of superman 🫶
this movie genuinely balances the silly superhero ‘not taking itself too seriously’ with the genuine deep topics they are dealing with. every actor put in full effort and were passionate about this movie and it clearly shows with how well represented each character is, especially david corenswet as superman because it’s such a hard role to fill especially with there being such popular versions of the movie before.
the contrast between superman 2025 and man of steel really shows how much inspiration the new movie takes from the original 1978 and smallville, but especially superman 1978, with its bright colours and overall funny and unserious plot while still dealing with these topics and it’s really nice to see considering they have a 47 year difference in release, it really shows how timeless these characters and these stories are.
this time i really noticed how when clark is being interviewed by lois and he says he doesn’t represent anyone except from himself and doing good it’s almost ripping off the label he had with the motto “i represent truth, justice and the american way” which i think makes sense because he did only ever want to do good and wore the symbol of hope, not a symbol for a country but for everyone, compared to say captain america who actively represents that country with his name and his outfit.
having the justice gang show up instead of superman in that scene was genuinely so important in that scene, and i get why people are like upset because it would’ve been cool if he did but the point of that scene is that it really doesn’t matter who shows up as long as someone does, and in a way i think it’s kinda like how we don’t have any superheroes in the real world but it doesn’t matter, as long as people try their best to help each other.
the importance of mali to the story as well i think really impacts superman obviously because his death is what changes metamorpho’s mind in continuing to kill superman but i think clark’s character really shifts after that, but not in a usual way where a character might turn to violence. it really just seemed like he wasn’t just doing this to defend himself, like even if he was completely beaten down by being called an alien and having everyone hate him he would keep going because even one person loved him no matter what and completely believed and trusted him, that was enough for him to persevere, and that is the literal point of superman like the most genuine portrayal because of course he represents himself but he just wants to help people and do good.
also this translates into his love for krypto as well like he was willing to turn himself in and possibly be tortured and killed just to make sure krypto is okay, despite saying he’s not even a good dog it doesn’t matter to him which is why it’s so crucial that he isn’t the one that kills gircos. i’m glad they had hawkgirl do it instead because it needed to happen but it would go against superman’s whole character to do it.
and of course superman’s speech at the end which before this watch i watched the creative arguement that david corenswet and james gunn had about that scene where james tells him that superman’s feelings about feeling bad are okay, makes him even more human because it’s only natural for him to have his feelings hurt by lex constantly hating him and attacking him just for trying to do good. this scene, which had so much feeling it genuinely feels so real because of course it doesn’t matter where he came from it’s what makes him human, how everyone is connected.
there’s probably more i could say but it just means that i’ll have to watch this masterpiece again.
thank you james gunn and the whole team that created this movie. 🫶🫶🫶
